Theo Von Druessel  -  A Touching Story

In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Mbembe approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Mbembe worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.

Mbembe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Mbembe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Mbembe was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Mbembe and his son Tapu were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Mbembe, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Mbembe couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Mbembe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Mbembe' s legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

My favorite shot from today

I was out shooting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia today. I met a group of young boys studying to become monks and they kindly stopped and posed for a few pictures. One boy really wanted a copy of his picture. I kept trying to explain it was digital but he didn't speak English.

I ended up finding a shop that would print and printed his picture. Through the 'monk network' I was able to track him down and give it to him. He was very happy. I image he doesn't have any photos of himself. He looked proud when he got it. It felt great...a good day.

look for my shots on www.shoottokyo.com later tonight.

Daniel Hathaway  -  +Robert Taylor Agreed -- A trial period for the app demonstrates that the developer has faith in the quality of their code. The short expiration period for returns on the Google Play store does not do developers any favors, and I am not sure what the Apple App store return policy is. If you are charging $4.99 ( a pretty high price considering the average of other apps ), give me the chance to validate the functionality of the application -- especially if I am dealing with the fragmented nature of the many Android OS deployments.

Where We Head

Sometimes we can see the path ahead and we travel on, sometimes the path cannot be seen and we falter. Its within ourselves to understand when to take the path and when to stay.

Follow your heart and listen to your mind and between the two you will know the way to go, there is no dishonour in turning around when bravery can be foolish.

I know my path, I know my way, I know there will be ...

That doesn't mean that there aren't better options for some of their products, but unlike most consumer companies, when I use a Google product I am comfortable that the company is not intentionally trying to screw me (ahem, Microsoft). I also love that everything is in an eternal Beta state. It seems like changes come fast and furious to almost every google product on an almost daily basis. I love that they are not afraid to try new things and drop them when the don't work. the best part is that for the most part, the functionality of their products remains even while they are tinkering in the background. All this tells me that this is a company that cares deeply about what they do and actually listen to user input. That to me is a HUGE part of the appeal.

Matt Burns  -  +Clayton Kern Ah, but if the zombie plague is blood-borne, you want to avoid splatter to prevent further spreading the infection! If you find yourself working at close-quarters, blunt weapons like baseball bats (or cricket bats, depending) would be best to minimize the risk of contacting infected blood, but it's best to keep your distance and dispatch infected with headshots using a small caliber weapon. (Small caliber is, again, to minimize splatter. I'm quite proficient with my .22 rifle.) Because gunfire might attract unwanted attention, bows and crossbows would, of course, be preferred, but the higher degree of required skill, shorter range, and decreased carrying capacity of ammunition then become concerns.

(Yes, I've thought about this entirely too much.)

There is no punchline, however. +Face the Nation hung out with a total of four people. Out of the entire nation. It's funny +Adam Howardwas discussing how the media is basically a gigantic joke when it comes to accurately reporting factual information to the public. Now to convince most of the people in the nation that the news, truly, really, actually is just a bunch of lies designed to entice and get a rise out of you. But it's Bush league population manipulation. Laughable, man. Ha!

Just in time for Good Friday, Easter and Passover, we have Jon Meacham’s essay on the debate in the religious world about the meaning and definition of Heaven. This is a worthy complement to his cover last year on Hell. Jon writes that more and more theologians are saying that heaven isn’t a place you go, it’s how you live your life. It is the idea that heaven is...

Mike's Phone and Tablet Support  -  It would be cool if they had a Nexus software/app store or something a little more exclusive. At this point all high end tablets are pretty close in specs. I don't think branding the slate with the Nexus name is enough to give it an appeal. It needs attractive exclusive features.

I'm not sure about windows phone, but on Android, 16gb really = around 12gb that i can actually use. Throw a few cds and audio books, and a few hundred 8mp pictures on there and things start getting very tight
Apr 5, 2012
Joseph Brennan  -  I get the feeling that Nokia is just using the 900 as a filler phone until "Apollo" arrives. Assuming "Apollo" boosts Windows into the spec race, Nokia must have a monster phone waiting in the wings for this fall.
